ReviewerOne FAQ

What technology does ReviewerOne use?
ReviewerOne is a single, self-contained HTML file. Its interface and functions use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, including JavaScript libraries bundled into the file for reading and exporting PDFs. It does not require an installer or executable.
Does ReviewerOne use artificial intelligence?
No. ReviewerOne does not use AI, language models, or cloud-based processing. Its features use conventional, deterministic JavaScript.
Is my manuscript uploaded?
No. The manuscript PDF is opened and processed locally in your web browser. It is not uploaded to ReviewerOne, the ReviewerOne website, or any other server.
Is my review uploaded?
No. Your current review, previous saved reviews, and saved comments remain in your local browser. ReviewerOne does not use user accounts or a server-side database for review content.
What information is stored on my computer?
ReviewerOne can store the manuscript PDF, detected manuscript number, review text, previous saved reviews, saved comments, stopwatch time, and review acceptance, deadline, and submission dates so that you can continue after closing the app. The PDF is stored in the browser's IndexedDB and the remaining information is stored in local browser storage. Anyone with access to the same computer and browser profile may be able to access this information.
Does ReviewerOne connect to the internet?
Its core reviewing functions work locally and do not require an internet connection. When ReviewerOne opens, it makes one automatic request to check whether a newer app version is available.
Is my installed app version uploaded during the update check?
No. ReviewerOne downloads a small version marker from the website and compares it with the installed version locally. It does not send your manuscript, review, saved comments, or installed app version. As with any web request, the website host may receive standard connection information such as an IP address and browser details.
What happens if the update check fails?
Nothing happens to your review. The check fails silently and all local reviewing functions continue to work.
What information is collected when I download ReviewerOne?
The website increments an aggregate download counter. It does not receive your manuscript or review. The website host may retain standard request information associated with visiting a website or downloading a file.
What happens when I select “Visit website”?
The ReviewerOne website opens in a new browser tab. This only happens when you select the button.
What happens when I select “Provide feedback”?
Your default email application opens a new message addressed to reviewerone@icloud.com. Nothing is sent unless you choose to send the email.
Can ReviewerOne access other files on my computer?
No. ReviewerOne can only access the PDF that you explicitly choose using the Open manuscript PDF button.
